Gimbap-Samgak

Triangle Kimbap

삼각김밥

A triangular rice ball wrapped in seaweed with a savory filling at the center — the essential Korean convenience store snack.

Samgak gimbap (triangle kimbap) is the defining food of Korea's hyeondae (modern) convenience store culture, a compact triangular parcel of seasoned rice encasing a filling — tuna mayo, spicy pork, kimchi, bulgogi, and dozens of other options — wrapped in a clever three-layer packaging that keeps the seaweed crisp until the moment of eating. The packaging itself is a minor engineering marvel that Koreans learn to open as children: pull the tabs in the correct sequence and the seaweed wraps perfectly around the rice without wrinkling. GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, and Emart24 convenience stores sell millions daily, making samgak gimbap the fuel of Korean office workers, students, soldiers, and travelers. Despite its simplicity, regional and seasonal flavors rotate constantly — stores release limited editions tied to trends, collaborations, and holidays — creating a dedicated following of samgak collectors. The snack's role in Korean popular culture is immense: it appears in countless manhwa, webtoons, and dramas as the quintessential late-night study or overtime food. At around 1,000–1,500 won each, it represents extraordinary value and has become a food tourists specifically seek out at Korean convenience stores.

✦ Tastypinch tip

Entirely hand food; the packaging doubles as a clean holder.

How to eat it

  1. Hold the triangle with the number '1' tab facing you.
  2. Pull tab 1 downward, then tabs 2 and 3 to each side to release the seaweed.
  3. Wrap the seaweed around the rice and eat immediately before the seaweed softens.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling all tabs at once instead of in sequence causes the seaweed to tear and crumple.
